For sixteen seasons, my job was to show up. Every night - whatever the pressure, whatever the pain - to be counted on. That discipline defined my career, but it was never really about basketball. It was about character. And character is what I've spent my life trying to pass on to the next generation.
I played sixteen years in the NBA and won three championships with the Los Angeles Lakers across three decades - in 1987, 1988, and 2000. I began alongside Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, James Worthy, and Coach Pat Riley, and finished with Shaquille O'Neal, Kobe Bryant, Robert Horry, Derek Fisher, and Coach Phil Jackson. I remain the only player in Laker history to lift the trophy in both the Forum and Staples Center. Along the way I shared the court with Charles Barkley in Phoenix, Dirk Nowitzki in Dallas, and Alonzo Mourning in Miami, and today I serve as one of the NBA's Global Ambassadors.
I'm perhaps best known for a streak: 1,192 consecutive games, which earned me the name the NBA's “Iron Man.” I never missed a night. To me, that number was never about endurance for its own sake - it was about faithfulness. Being present. Keeping my word. Those are the same values I try to live by off the court.
Basketball gave me a platform; what I've chosen to build on it matters far more to me. In 1989, I founded the A.C. Green Youth Foundation, dedicated to helping young people build self-esteem, character, and the moral grounding to make responsible choices about their lives. Through our “I've Got the Power” and “Game Plan” programmes - curriculum, videos, and leadership camps - we've carried a simple, countercultural message to young people: your worth is real, your choices matter, and your future is worth protecting.
That conviction is rooted in my faith. It is the reason I've stood by unpopular truths when it would have been easier to stay silent, and the reason my work with youth has always meant more to me than any title or trophy.
Beyond the foundation, I've built and led as an entrepreneur - at one time the largest minority owner of Denny's restaurants in the United States, among other ventures - and I've served as a mentor, author, speaker, and business consultant. My work with young people has been recognised in the Congressional Record and honoured at the White House, and I've carried this message across the world, from China and India to Korea, Malaysia, and the Philippines.
HOLYDEEDS is a natural continuation of that calling. Its mission - to bring faith, beauty, and meaning to a new generation through art and technology - speaks directly to the work I've given my life to. I'm proud to lend my voice to a project that meets young people where they are and points them toward something greater than themselves.
THOUGHTS THAT GUIDE ME
Consistency is its own form of greatness. Anyone can be great once; the harder thing is to be faithful every single day. That is what I tried to be as a player, and what I try to be as a man.
Our children are always watching - and the truest measure of success is what we build in the lives of those who come after us. Talent fades; character endures.
Real strength is not in never falling, but in standing for what is right, especially when it costs something.
WHAT GROUNDS ME
My faith is the foundation of everything - my career, my convictions, and my commitment to young people. It has been my compass through every season, on the court and beyond. Everything I've built, I've built in service of something far greater than myself: the hope that the next generation will know their worth and live with purpose.
